THE MARIST BROTHERS:

The Marist Brothers (Little Brothers of Mary) are a group of consecrated lay religious men in the Roman Catholic Church. They were founded in France by a French Priest, Marcellin Joseph Benedict Champagnat. The charism of the Marist Brothers is Christian Education of the youth, especially those most deprived. The Marist Brothers are thus educators who try to give holistic education to their pupils and students. The Marist Brothers work in Pre-schools, Basic Schools, Secondary and Tertiary institutions.

ST. MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT SCHOOL:

St. Marcellin Champagnat School, started on the 4th September 2001. The school is named after the founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin Champagnat. The founder was made a SAINT of the Catholic Church on April 18, 1999, the same year construction work of the school started.

The aim of St. Marcellin Champagnat School is to give affordable education to the youth around especially those unable to go to far away and “expensive” schools, to give Christian foundation to youth and to form good citizens for society.

The school is owned, run and maintained by the Marist Brothers with funds generated from tuition fees, contributions, donations from parents, charitable and voluntary organizations. The school started with Br Cyprian Gandeebo as headteacher and Br Andrew Iwuagwu as Bursar. Br Andrew was later replaced by Br Vincent Mé and Br Aureliano Garcia also replaced Br Vincent Mé. Br Daniel Osei Kwadwo also replaced Br Aureliano Garcia. Mr Stephen Gerar in 2005 replaced Br Cyprian Gandeebo as headteacher.

The school is registered with the Ghana Education Service, (Education Act, 1961) under the Ghana National Association of Private Schools with Reg. No: AR/KMA/P.0362

The school started with 30 pupils in attendance, 2 teachers reported with 2 security men and a cook. The Headteacher, Bursar and Staff member in the first day of schools were:

The school later engaged two casual cleaners:

  1. Mrs Elizabeth Manu
  2. Mrs Ellen Oduro

The first term lasted 15 weeks starting from 04th September to 13th December 2001.

Today, St Marcellin School has a student population of 765 (Boys and Girls) ranging from Nursery one to JHS three and a Staff strength of 55.
